Breaking Deals This Spring

Travelers are always asking “When is the best time to go?”  How ’bout now?  Lucky for you, this week we’ve identified some great Caribbean deals for the spring that offer great value-for-the-money.

The Rose Hall Resort & Spa, a Hilton Resort outside of Montego Bay, has a great price of $364 per person for a 4-night stay including tax, service, airport transfers and the Gold all-inclusive plan. This 5-star beachfront resort is set amidst the Rose Hall Plantation, and even boasts its own on-site water park complete with a lazy river, water slide and waterfalls—perfect to keep the kids occupied while adults enjoy a round of golf at one of the many championship courses nearby.

Also, for the golf or spa enthusiasts, we heartily recommend the Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa in Bermuda, a 5-star property on the west coast of Bermuda that offers gracious Bermudian hospitality, daily breakfast, and a 4th night free for travel in March. With a flight time of just 2 hours from the East Coast, Cambridge Beaches is a great option for a long weekend getaway to recharge, relax, or spend some cozy time with your Kindle over afternoon tea.

Insider’s Hamilton: A Guest Post From Our Bermuda Resident Editor

Gentlemen, start your engines. Or whatever the sailing equivalent of preparing for a major race is (Hoist the sails? Batten down the hatches?). According to Cruising World, the Notice of Race for the Newport Bermuda Race 2010 has officially been posted, which essentially means all you sailors hoping to enter the “thrash to the Onion Patch” have until March 30 to enter the historic international ocean race.

The Newport Bermuda Race was founded in 1906 as the first ocean race for amateur sailors, and has since become one of the world’s premier sailing events—a 635-mile open-ocean contest, most of it out of sight of land. Every two years in mid-June a fleet of nearly 200 boats in five classes set sail from Newport, Rhode Island, to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton, Bermuda, and luckily for us islanders, this is the year. The race kicks off on June 18 and normally takes five to six days to complete. Which means right around the weekend of June 25, there should be a big ‘ol party here in Bermuda.

If you’re thinking of snagging a spot for this event, head to Voyage.tv to book your trip to Bermuda today!

Here you’ll meet executive chef Lauren Callighen, who tells us about her Canadian roots and simplistic, yet innovative style of Mediterranean-Caribbean cooking.

O'SOLEIL_448x300Follow Callighen into the kitchen where she whips up some of her favorite specialties in an O’Soleil Trio, including a pistachio-crusted seared sea scallop, a spin on the classic Caesar salad with plantain croutons, roasted pumpkin soup with tamarind and braised oxtail ravioli. Next up she prepares a filet of red snapper straight from the waters of South Caicos, paired with coconut milk and mango risotto.

Introducing Our Las Vegas Resident Editor

This week we’d like to introduce you to our Las Vegas Resident Editor Michael Martin.

Michael is a travel and lifestyle journalist covering everything from the newest hotel hot spot on the Las Vegas Strip to the latest LA eatery to shutter on the West Coast.

“I’ve always loved to travel, even as an awkward 11-year-old when I would scour the AAA Hotel Book looking for coupons to use with my grandma for a getaway to Carmel,” Martin says.

Before joining Voyage.tv, Michael was a nightlife and entertainment columnist for AOL followed by broadcast work on ITV and BBC, “on shows far enough away from America to never be seen by friends or family,” he says. His work has appeared in Blackbook, InStyle, ELLE, RED Magazine, NPR, and Angeleno. He’s currently a featured contributor at JetSetReport.com, where he writes a syndicated column that leads readers from one global hot spot to the next.

“I’d like to be able to fly without a plane,” he says when asked about his future travel ambitions. ” I think one day we’ll look back and think of how archaic it was to fly in a steel-tube surrounded by kerosene while eating warm nuts.”

Production Weighs In on Bermuda’s Seasonal Weather

After spending over a month shooting on the island in summer 2009, the entire Voyage.tv crew came to know and love the fickle weather of Bermuda. As any local Bermudian will tell you, “If you don’t like the weather in Bermuda, give it five minutes!” From our experience upon returning to the island in January to shoot our brand new Golf Bermuda series, truer words have never been spoken.

While there we had to contend with unseasonably strong winds and more rain than usual (Bermuda doesn’t have a rainy season, it’s pretty even year-round). And considering we had our Director of Photography shooting glory shots down the middle of the fairway from the roof of a golf cart, the wind was definitely difficult to contend with. But with the wind came quickly moving clouds, so the few times we were caught in a downpour, we knew the sun was never far behind.

While it is about ten degrees cooler on average in the winter months than in the summer, that’s still a balmy 65-70°F!  For anyone who isn’t fortunate to live in a tropical climate, it’s still paradise.

Our verdict:  Whether January or June, if you’re heading to Bermuda, sign us up!

Enjoy taking a look at some behind-the-scenes photos from our trip below. —Jessie Warner
