An Easy 72 Hours in Bermuda Courtesy of BlackBook

Cambridge Beaches is one of our favorite Bermuda hotels. Sophisticated and refined, the island’s oldest resort epitomizes the posh Bermudan aesthetic—and at a couple of hours away, it’s an easy weekend getaway. Our partners at BlackBook make a very convincing argument for why you should go ahead and pull the trigger on that shockingly affordable airline ticket.

With summer suddenly upon us, there’s no reason not to start fantasizing about weekend getaways. Besides, once the brutal heat starts casting a constant glare on the city pavement, you’ll be wishing you followed through with all the brilliant ideas that popped into your head daydreaming in your cubicle. Brilliant idea No. 1: Cambridge Beaches in Bermuda.

The British territory is a two hour flight from New York. (Surprising, right?) And Jetblue flies from JFK, with one-ways starting at $63. After a quick mid-flight slumber, you’ll be transported to a tropical paradise with pink sand beaches, potent Dark & Stormy cocktails, and a population of incredibly friendly folks who speak with an Elizabethan English-inspired accent that might sound a bit bizarre at first. Don’t worry, you’ll acclimate quickly.

Breaking Deals This Spring

Travelers are always asking “When is the best time to go?”  How ’bout now?  Lucky for you, this week we’ve identified some great Caribbean deals for the spring that offer great value-for-the-money.

The Rose Hall Resort & Spa, a Hilton Resort outside of Montego Bay, has a great price of $364 per person for a 4-night stay including tax, service, airport transfers and the Gold all-inclusive plan. This 5-star beachfront resort is set amidst the Rose Hall Plantation, and even boasts its own on-site water park complete with a lazy river, water slide and waterfalls—perfect to keep the kids occupied while adults enjoy a round of golf at one of the many championship courses nearby.

Also, for the golf or spa enthusiasts, we heartily recommend the Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa in Bermuda, a 5-star property on the west coast of Bermuda that offers gracious Bermudian hospitality, daily breakfast, and a 4th night free for travel in March. With a flight time of just 2 hours from the East Coast, Cambridge Beaches is a great option for a long weekend getaway to recharge, relax, or spend some cozy time with your Kindle over afternoon tea.

Insider’s Hamilton: A Guest Post From Our Bermuda Resident Editor

Gentlemen, start your engines. Or whatever the sailing equivalent of preparing for a major race is (Hoist the sails? Batten down the hatches?). According to Cruising World, the Notice of Race for the Newport Bermuda Race 2010 has officially been posted, which essentially means all you sailors hoping to enter the “thrash to the Onion Patch” have until March 30 to enter the historic international ocean race.

The Newport Bermuda Race was founded in 1906 as the first ocean race for amateur sailors, and has since become one of the world’s premier sailing events—a 635-mile open-ocean contest, most of it out of sight of land. Every two years in mid-June a fleet of nearly 200 boats in five classes set sail from Newport, Rhode Island, to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton, Bermuda, and luckily for us islanders, this is the year. The race kicks off on June 18 and normally takes five to six days to complete. Which means right around the weekend of June 25, there should be a big ‘ol party here in Bermuda.

If you’re thinking of snagging a spot for this event, head to Voyage.tv to book your trip to Bermuda today!

Production Weighs In on Bermuda’s Seasonal Weather

After spending over a month shooting on the island in summer 2009, the entire Voyage.tv crew came to know and love the fickle weather of Bermuda. As any local Bermudian will tell you, “If you don’t like the weather in Bermuda, give it five minutes!” From our experience upon returning to the island in January to shoot our brand new Golf Bermuda series, truer words have never been spoken.

While there we had to contend with unseasonably strong winds and more rain than usual (Bermuda doesn’t have a rainy season, it’s pretty even year-round). And considering we had our Director of Photography shooting glory shots down the middle of the fairway from the roof of a golf cart, the wind was definitely difficult to contend with. But with the wind came quickly moving clouds, so the few times we were caught in a downpour, we knew the sun was never far behind.

While it is about ten degrees cooler on average in the winter months than in the summer, that’s still a balmy 65-70°F!  For anyone who isn’t fortunate to live in a tropical climate, it’s still paradise.

Our verdict:  Whether January or June, if you’re heading to Bermuda, sign us up!

Notes from Production: Back to Bermuda!

For those who can’t get enough of our Bermuda signature programming, we have some exciting news. This January, Voyage.tv returned to the beautiful island of Bermuda to shoot a brand new series, Golf Bermuda.  Our challenge included 1 Golf Pro Host, 1 Crew, 7 courses and 4 days!!  From the sprawling fairways of the Port Royal Golf Course (which recently underwent a major $15 million renovation), to the sun-drenched, rolling greens of Mid Ocean Golf Club, we covered every nook and cranny of golf in Bermuda – an island that flaunts more golf courses per square mile than any other place in the world.

This year’s Bermuda Open Golf Championship boasted the first ever female competitors since its inception in 1966, and we were there to get exclusive interviews with some of the players about their experiences.  We also sat down with Terrett West, President of the Bermuda Golf Association, to talk golf.

As always, the people of Bermuda – the entire golf community included – welcomed us with open arms, and provided us with lots of great content for the series.  It was a busy and successful week, and it was hard for us to leave!

While you anticipate viewing our Golf Bermuda programming in the coming months, take a look at some behind-the-scenes photographs straight from the green:
