Wanderlust: Las Vegas

Introducing guest blogger and travel journalist Madhu Puri

Even if you rarely read gossip rags, it’s likely you’ve come across an image of Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian tabletop dancing at one of Vegas’ many clubs. For my one and only bachelorette party this past weekend, I decided to channel the celebutantes and see for myself what Vegas, beyond the gaming tables and Cirque shows, is all about.

Much more a spa-on-the-beach kind of gal, this was me venturing into my last days of singledom with a “when in Rome” mentality. You only get married once right? (At least we all hope so). Staying at The Palazzo, the centrally located sister hotel to Strip standby, The Venetian, afforded us easy access to the town’s best clubs. We started our first night out at Tao Beach, located on the hotels’ property. The sprawling four-floor nightclub’s Asian aesthetic is dark, exotic and Zen in contrast to all the activity happening within. It took two elevator rides to reach our reserved cabana, but once there, it all made sense. Partying with palm trees, a pool and a bevy of good-looking people all around you definitely has its perks. Not to mention, the cabana afforded a private perch from where we could people watch and maintain that feeling of exclusivity. The best part, when it was time to leave, home was just another elevator ride away.

Our daytime excursion was into the Vegas pool party scene. Having already got our feet wet at Tao, we opted for something smaller and tamer. Azure, The Palazzo’s pool club, was the perfect balance of party and pampering (minus the unexplained morning techno music that really didn’t jive with our hangover-ridden selves). We tried the cabana here, a light, airy room with walls, where our smiling waitress brought us whatever we craved and where a flatscreen even allowed us the luxury of keeping track of the Derby, which we all had bet on. At night, we headed to two more top spots, LAVO, a “restauclub” with delicious Italian food, and XS, where another gorgeous pool scene awaited. Located in the Encore at The Wynn hotel, just next door to The Palazzo, XS was gilt, slick, classy and buzzing with people worth getting to know. It’s enormity and indoor/outdoor space made for one singular experience. A club girl, I am not, but if I had to do it all over again, poolside clubbing in the desert is one perfect way to party.

Insider’s Vegas: A Guest Post From Our Las Vegas Resident Editor

The Pool Party Season Begins!

Alas, it’s that time of year when the Vegas pools start to sizzle with a new crop of summer parties that turn the otherwise tranquil swimming spaces into Miami-style beach clubs including celebrity DJs, champagne snow cones and late afternoon dance-offs in the shallow sections. Some of Vegas’s top pool parties are located in the main resort pool, like those at the Hard Rock Hotel and the Palms, while others are sequestered at their own private ultra-pools like those at MGM Grand and The Mirage.

REHAB at the Hard Rock is one of the top pool parties in Vegas, happening every Sunday throughout the summer season with $30 cover entry for men and $20 for women if not staying at the hotel, in which case entry is free of charge.

While BARE at the Mirage and Moorea at Mandalay Bay are all back for the season, look for more celeb party action at WET Republic at MGM Grand with parties planned by LL Cool, Kim Kardashian and Roger Sanchez. WET is the top Saturday pool party in Vegas, edging out Tao Beach and Party at the Palms upon opening, with a massive indoor/outdoor lounge experience with cover upwards of $15 and cabana service for around $300 per day.

For something more upscale, you’ll have to wait for the Encore Beach Club opening at the Wynn Las Vegas over Memorial Day 2010, promising outdoor gaming tables and a St. Tropez-style tanning scene. Until then, get your bikini body ready and book a stay at one of these Las Vegas hotels!

Introducing Our Las Vegas Resident Editor

This week we’d like to introduce you to our Las Vegas Resident Editor Michael Martin.

Michael is a travel and lifestyle journalist covering everything from the newest hotel hot spot on the Las Vegas Strip to the latest LA eatery to shutter on the West Coast.

“I’ve always loved to travel, even as an awkward 11-year-old when I would scour the AAA Hotel Book looking for coupons to use with my grandma for a getaway to Carmel,” Martin says.

Before joining Voyage.tv, Michael was a nightlife and entertainment columnist for AOL followed by broadcast work on ITV and BBC, “on shows far enough away from America to never be seen by friends or family,” he says. His work has appeared in Blackbook, InStyle, ELLE, RED Magazine, NPR, and Angeleno. He’s currently a featured contributor at JetSetReport.com, where he writes a syndicated column that leads readers from one global hot spot to the next.

“I’d like to be able to fly without a plane,” he says when asked about his future travel ambitions. ” I think one day we’ll look back and think of how archaic it was to fly in a steel-tube surrounded by kerosene while eating warm nuts.”
