Last week, we informed you that our New York cycle will be launching soon and covered some of the shooting that’s been happening here in the city. Today, we drill deeper with a guest post by our Signature Series Production Manager Jessie Warner:
Hi-Jessie Warner, Voyage TV Production Manager here. We’re getting all our ducks in a row here at Voyage.tv for our NY launch. Part of that includes going to fabulous places and meeting interesting characters along the way. Last Thursday proved to be an amazing shoot. We spent the day at Devachan - for those who don’t know it’s a salon dedicated to the cult of the curl.
I was in heaven! I like to think of Lorraine Massey, Owner and Creator of Devachan, as the Curly Girl Guru. As a naturally curly haired woman, it was wonderful to spend the day in a place that celebrates whatever hair you’ve been given instead of being attacked with a straightening iron. It was also kind of exciting that Lorraine and I sort of look like sisters… Blond corkscrews unite!
There are three Devachan locations in New York. We shot this segment at the Soho studio. It’s a beautiful loft-like space filled with whimsical touches like hair-art (!), mosquito nets draped over the “hair cleansing” beds, hand-shaped diffusers sitting at each station, and rows upon rows of the Devacurl products lining the shelves (which I use, by the way, they work WONDERS). Another thing I love about this place – yes, there are many – is the main color scheme for the brand – a bright lime green that echos the playful energy of the place.
Our host, Paula Garces, got a tour of the salon and spa (they have a spa, too!), and interviewed Lorraine about the “curl-volution” happening all over the world. Paula also had her hair colored and styled, using Devachan’s unique highlighting technique known as “Pintura.” They paint individual locks of hair to catch the natural light – the end result is that your hair looks shinier and brighter but still natural. She looked great to begin with, but gorgeous after her hair was finished. Even our sound mixer, Rick, was impressed!
I can’t wait to see how the segment turns out – I think it will be fun and informative, and I have a feeling many a Voyage viewer will be calling to make an appointment after watching. It’ll be one more video that reveals the secrets of the city we call home. Here’s to counting down to the November Launch! –JW
